Fred Malek remains one of Washington's ultimate insiders. The other night he had President Bush -- the one living in the White House -- over for a fundraising dinner at his palatial home overlooking the Potomac River in McLean, where he lives with his wife of 46 years, Marlene Malek. He is not a billionaire, but he has his own plane and a house in Aspen. He has certainly come a long way from growing up the son of a Chicago beer delivery man -- a Democrat, no less.

The Oregon Ducks had an entire season to establish themselves, to answer that key preseason question: How do they replace Aaron Brooks?

After two exhibition games, 12 nonconference games, 18 Pacific-10 Conference games, one Pac-10 tournament game and a season-ending 76-69 loss to Mississippi State in the NCAA Tournament, they never really found an answer.

"We just couldn't find our identity," said guard Tajuan Porter, one of four returning players from last season's final-eight team. "We had spurts where we played good Oregon basketball. But it just wasn't a whole year of basketball. We didn't show people the Oregon way."

Portland State coach Ken Bone was named Big Sky coach of the year on Tuesday. He has the 23-9 Vikings in the NCAA Tournament for the first time, so no one would be shocked if his phone starts ringing as the coaching carousel starts spinning in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Oregon State is in the midst of a coaching search, and questions persist about whether Oregon will stick with Ernie Kent.

In partnership with Oregon Sports Network (OSN) and IMG College, the UO has agreed to an extension and new partnership for multi-media marketing rights worth $67.14 million over the next 10 years. The multi-media rights agreement will include management of the television and radio rights and programming, advertising, licensing video boards and signage.

The contract provides $4 million upfront for capital investment in video boards and signage in the proposed basketball arena, Autzen Stadium and the new baseball park. In addition, IMG-OSN will guarantee the UO $56.22 million in cash over ten years, $2.5 million for the right to market the naming opportunity for the new baseball field, and $8.42 million for production services and infrastructure for video board and game day presentations, programs, ticket purchase and other trade.

Oregon's Zimmerman Elected Into NFL Hall of Fame

Former University of Oregon All-American Gary Zimmerman has become the sixth Ducks’ standout elected into the NFL Hall of Fame.

The long-overdue honor caps a long list of accolades for one of the best football players in school history, who completed his collegiate career by receiving the Morris Trophy as the Pacific-10 Conference’s top offensive lineman his senior year. The first-team all-conference and All-Coast choice, who played for the Ducks from 1980-83, earned the rare distinction of receiving league player-of-the-week acclaim following a 1983 win over California.
